SBVR — SBVR Issue - Concept Expression versus Meaning Expression

  • Key: SBVR-87
  • Legacy Issue Number: 9934
  • Status: closed
  • Source: Google ( Don Baisley)
  • Summary:

    Concept Expression versus Meaning Expression

The following fact types in 11.2.2.2 and 11.2.2.3 relate to concepts:

    concept is portrayed by description

concept is illustrated by descriptive example

concept is commented on in note

    concept is supported by reference

All of these relationships should be generalized to relate to ‘meaning’ rather than to ‘concept’. As it is, SBVR does not support having a description, descriptive example, note or reference for a business rule because a business rule is another kind of meaning (a proposition rather than a concept).

Recommendation: replace the fact types above with these:

    meaning is portrayed by description

meaning is illustrated by descriptive example

meaning is commented on in note

    meaning is supported by reference
