SBVR — Use Plural Rather than “Set of Each”

  • Key: SBVR-36
  • Legacy Issue Number: 9462
  • Status: closed
  • Source: Google ( Don Baisley)
  • Summary:

When a reference scheme extensionally uses a role of a fact type, the SBVR Structure English takes the form “the set of each <singular noun> that <singular verb> …”. This is a very awkward wording. Plurals should be used: “the set of <plural noun> that <plural verb> …”. Examples of how this improves understandability are readily seen in the recommended changes below.

    Recommendation:

Make the following changes, in each case removing the word “each” and pluralizing the noun, and verb if given. Keep the fonts as they are.

Pg. 25, “the set of each placeholder” becomes “the set of placeholders”.

Pg. 29, “the set of each role that is” becomes “the set of roles that are”, twice.

Pg. 43, “the set of each concept that is” becomes “the set of concepts that are”, twice.

Pg. 45, “the set of each role binding” becomes “the set of role bindings”.

Pg. 57, “the set of each logical formulation that restricts” becomes “the set of logical formulations that restrict”.

Pg. 58, “the set of each logical formulation that is” becomes “the set of logical formulations that are”, thrice.

Pg. 58, “the set of each logical formulation that restricts” becomes “the set of logical formulations that restrict”, thrice.

Pg. 59, “the set of each logical formulation that is” becomes “the set of logical formulations that are”, thrice.

Pg. 59, “the set of each logical formulation that restricts” becomes “the set of logical formulations that restrict”, thrice.

Pg. 60, “the set of each logical formulation that is” becomes “the set of logical formulations that are”.

Pg. 60, “the set of each logical formulation that restricts” becomes “the set of logical formulations that restrict”.

Pg. 68, “the set of each variable that is” becomes “the set of variables that are”.

Pg. 68, “the set of each logical formulation that constrains” becomes “the set of logical formulations that constrain”.

Pg. 129, “the set of each symbol context that qualifies” becomes “the set of symbol contexts that qualify”.

Pg. 206, “the set of each role that is” becomes “the set of roles that are”, twice.

Pg. 206, in the second paragraph of C.3.9, change “the set of each” to “the set of”.
