Summary:
A direct comparison between entities within MODAF/ NAF and UPDM shows a number of distinct differences. The ones of major concern are:
· MODAF/ NAF places all of its solution based entities within the system view something that is not the case for UPDM which presents a much more convoluted picture. This is seen as a major advantage for MODAF/ NAF in comparison.
· MODAF/ NAF enables discussions about bandwidth and spectrum utilisation, something that is not a part of UPDM. UPDM differentiates between different types of communication systems and networks however but here the distinction between different entities is far less clear. NAF makes use of Network as an add-on to MODAF but this has primarily been included as a means of stating something in the architecture relating to spectrum and bandwidth.
· Both in the operational views as well as system views there are a couple of entities that deal with services in UPDM. This handling is seen as very inadequate. MODAF/ NAF contain a lot more in this area than UPDM and this is considered a major issue. In UPDM it also seems unclear whether a service description/ specification is being considered or if an implementation of a service is being described.
· The extremely large use of extensions of associations that are used by UPDM seems unnecessary and is seen as a problem. -
