Summary:
A direct comparison between entities within MODAF/ NAF and UPDM shows a number of distinct differences. The ones of major concern are:
· MODAF/ NAF attempts to ensure that the modelling taking place as part of the operational views is logical and it uses the concept of ProblemDomain to distinguish between entities that are inside or outside of the trade space of the architecture. This is seen as a great advantage. UPDM has no equivalent concepts and the inclusion of the Materiel entity within the Operational view diminishes the logical handling within the operational views.
· MODAF/ NAF contains a lot more stereotypes devoted to activity handling within the model than UPDM and while certain simplifications may be possible in this area, the area is still felt to be better covered in MODAF/ NAF than in UPDM
· UPDM does contain port handling within the operational views, something that can be used to ensure a proper semantic bridging between different levels of abstraction and this is seen as a UPDM advantage. There seems to be some need to complement this model also in UPDM however.
· The extremely large use of extensions of associations that are used by UPDM seems unnecessary and is seen as a problem. -
