Summary:
A direct comparison between entities within MODAF/ NAF and UPDM shows a number of distinct differences. The ones of major concern are:
· MODAF/ NAF ensure the ability to indicate capabilities composed of other capabilities. Whether this ability exists in UPDM is much less clear. In the same fashion MODAF/ NAF supports inheritance hierarchies between capabilities. This does not seem to be discussed within UPDM making it difficult to establish proper capability categorisation. The use of a type: String[1] within UPDM: Capability is not considered to be a valid substitute.
· As stated previously, the inclusion of Effect based entities within UPDM seems pre-mature and the fact that this has been avoided within MODAF/ NAF is perceived as strength.
· The field-trials and modelling that has been carried out based on MODAF/ NAF indicates that the MODAF/ NAF treatment of capability is valid.
· The MODAF/ NAF entity dealing named StandardOperationalActivity has proven to be very useful during modelling. No equivalent entity exists as part of UPDM. -
