SYSML11 — Semantic of default value in the scope of a DistributedProperty

  • Key: SYSML11-15
  • Legacy Issue Number: 10143
  • Status: closed
  • Source: International Business Machines ( Laurent Balmelli)
  • Summary:

    in paragraph 8.3.2.3, the semantic of a default value for a DistributedProperty is not specified. My suggestion is that the default values should be a realization of the random variable following the distribution. It would be nice to have an example in the paragraph too, for instance: <<uniform>>

    {min=0,max=2} p:Real=2 <<uniform>>{min=0,max=2}

    p:Real=1.2 but not: <<uniform>>

    {min=0,max=2}

    p:Real=2.3

  • Disposition: Resolved — SysML 1.1
  • Disposition Summary:

    Any value assigned to a property must lie within the values having non-zero
    probabilities as defined by an applied DistributedProperty stereotype. These
    constraint semantics are inherent in the concept of a probability distribution, and
    apply to the default or initial value along with all other values.
    How any further patterns of probabilities can expected to be observed, however,
    is currently unspecified by SysML. For example, the probabilities might be seen
    across the property values of different instances, or within a succession of values
    carried by a single instance. A specific user model must specify any such further
    interpretation of its applied property value distributions.
    Until or unless the SysML specification addresses more specific cases of how a
    user model must interpret its property value distributions, it is premature to
    preclude any interpretation that a model might apply. Different interpretations
    may be appropriate for different models, each of which may document any
    specific timing or scope for the values which may occur under the probability
    distribution.
    As referenced by section 8.3.2.3, some initial examples of distributed property
    stereotype definitions and their application in a user model are already provided
    in Annex C.6.
    Disposition: Closed, no change
