Summary:
The representation of Figure 9.59 could be taken to imply the conditioning event connects to the bottom of the gate. By convention the conditioning event connects to the side connector with the bottom connection used for the enabling condition.
This confusion is also conveyed in Figure 10.8 (page 111) -
