    on how numbers should be formatted:

    • integer values are just digits
    • floating point numbers use a '.' (period), with an optional leading
      zero and an optional leading +/- sign:
    • -0.912
    • scientific notation: optional leading zero, optional leading +/-
      sign on the exponent and mantissa:
    • -2.34E-12
