Summary:
The specification does not clearly describe what should happen with data in a reliable datawriter's history when the datawriter is deleted? Should it disappear immediately or wait until all messages in the history are delivered?
Resolution:
The right thing to do is provide some operation such that the user can wait for all data to be delivered:
Add an operation Publisher::delete_datawriter_after_acknowledgement( Duration_t timeout). Like DataReader::wait_for_historical_data, this operation takes its own timeout rather than using ReliabilityQosPolicy::max_blocking_time because it has to potentially wait for many writes to complete. As soon as all outstanding reliable samples are acknowledged, the DataWriter will be deleted and the operation will return OK. If timeout expires, however, before all samples are acknowledged, the operation will return TIMEOUT and the writer will not be deleted.
The regular Publisher::delete_datawriter should delete the writer immediately without waiting for any reliable samples to be acknowlwedged. Its description should be clarified accordingly. If delete_datawriter_after_acknowledgement fails, the user will then have the choice of either calling it again or accepting the possible loss of some samples and calling delete_datawriter.Revised Text:
