Summary:
Summary: I propose the addition of the new basic data type "opaque."
Many applications require the sending or retrieving of opaque data,
like graphical data or file contents. Currently, such data is packaged
as sequence<octet>.
In the past, the performance of passing sequence<octet> parameters
was not satisfactory because of the generic mapping of sequences. In
the recent C++ mapping, the dubious get_buffer() is introduced for
the mapping of sequences.
I feel that this matter is best resolved by adding a new data type
which can then be mapped efficiently into target languages without
the side effect of complicating the mapping of other sequences.
After all, a "string," too, is nothing but a sequence of char. -
