BPMN2 — Pools multiplicity

  • Key: BPMN2-192
  • Legacy Issue Number: 14754
  • Status: closed
  • Source: Bruce Silver Associates ( Mr. Bruce Silver)
  • Summary:

Table 9-1 says a diagram containing pools, i.e. Collaboration, must contain 2 or more. Then is says "Note that the multiplicity of the pools model association is an open issue and may be changed in a later revision of the specification," but it is unclear whether this means the minimum of 2 pools in a diagram or relates to the MI marker on pools. If the former, I think the minimum should be 1 and it should not wait until a later revision of the sepcification. The reasons are
    1) backward compatibility with BPMN 1.1, in which all BPDs were assumed to have at least one pool, whether boundary visible or not; and
    2) ability for modelers to create diagrams with just one pool, labeled with name of the process... and be able to create schema-valid xml from it.

Also... following fig 9-4 it says " ...the Activities that represent the work performed from the point of view of the modeler or the modeler's organization may be considered "internal" Activities and are not required to be surrounded by the boundary of their Pool...". This is only true if all the activities are part of a single process (orchestration). I think better to say, "...a single process that represents the work performed from the point of view of the modeler or the modeler's organization may be considered "internal" and is not required to be surrounded by the boundary of its Pool...".

  • Disposition: Resolved — BPMN 2.0
  • Disposition Summary:

The metamodel allows for Collaborations to have zero (0) or more Pools. Thus, it is possible to create a Collaboration with just one Pool. The statement that a
Collaboration contains two (2) Pools is inaccurate and will be fixed.
The statement about multiplicity of Pools being an open issue was removed from the specification prior to the completion of the Beta version.
Section 9.2, page 116 (146 pdf), first paragraph below Figure 9.4:
    (a) Change first sentence to:
"A Collaboration can contain at two (2) or more Pools (i.e., Participants)."
    (b) Change second sentence to:
"However, a Process that represents the work performed from the point of view of the modeler or the modeler's organization may be considered "internal" and is not
required to be surrounded by the boundary of the Pool, while the other Pools in the Diagram MUST have their boundary."
    Disposition: Resolved
