BACM11 — Binding object

  • Key: BACM11-53
  • Status: closed
  • Source: Thematix Partners LLC ( Mr. James Rhyne)
  • Summary:

The BIZBOK introduces the notion that value streams include the concept of a binding business object(s) whose state, together with entry and exit criteria controls the sequencing of value stream stages. How should BACM represent this concept? Is it explicit in the metamodel, or is it the result of analysis or some combination of these?

  • Disposition Summary:

    Unclear definition of "binding object"

The term "binding object" is used in the BIZBOK(tm) to denote one or more objects that appear to "have an overarching impact on value stream navigation. For example, the state of a shipment would have an overarching impact on a Send Shipment value stream."
Issue BACM11-3 (resolved by BACM11-22) has proposed to express value stream navigation by expressing entry and exit criteria as associations between value stream stages and outcomes. Outcomes are expressions of state of business objects, so per the BIZBOK definition, binding objects might be business objects whose state is expressed by outcomes that are entry and exit criteria of the stages of value streams.
The example binding objects in the BIZBOK examples are a small subset of the potential binding objects described above and it is unclear what criteria is being used to select them. It does not appear likely that discussions with the Guild will produce a clear definition prior to the expiration of this RTF, leading to a proposal to defer the issue.
