Summary:
Variables are local values created from bit/sub-bits specified in the entry list of container. They are similar to parameters but exist only within the scope of the container they are defined – they are of type integer. Reported by JPL.

Disposition Summary:
Propose to defer this to a later XTCE RFP
This an interesting idea that has merit.
Currently, the requested functionality can be achieved with XTCE as designed, but the Parameters would not be local. Some segregated parameters in a "scratch" Space System can be used to stand in for this feature without trouble.
At least 1 other project has done something like this when more than 1 interpretation of a series of bits in a container are needed and 1 of the interpretations is temporary for doing other comparisons/restrictions.
It could be better, but is out of scope for XTCE 1.2 because it would be a significant design change. No block to existing programs in 1.2.
