SBVR_ — Two SBVR Normative Definitions Use Deontic Logic in Error

  • Key: SBVR_-57
  • Legacy Issue Number: 10798
  • Status: closed
  • Source: Rule ML Initiative ( Mr. Donald R. Chapin)
  • Summary:

    STATEMENT

The following two definitions in Clause 8.1.2 of the SBVR Specification are wrong and need to be fixed:

In SBVR deontic logic is about organizational behaviour and nothing else. In SBVR alethic logic is about organizational meaning (“true by definition”) and nothing else.

    1. The definitions need to be reworded without using deontic logic

    2. Wording to make these two points absolutely clear needs to be added to the normative part of the SBVR Specification

  • Disposition: Resolved — SBVR 1.0
  • Disposition Summary:

The problem is that the definitions are phrased using "must" and "may", which, per Annex C means they state rules or advices rather than necessities. Rephrase them to use the 'acceptable world' terminology.
