    Summary: When the new IDL types were added (fixed, long double, etc), no new
    IIOP or GIOP version was introduced, and no new version of CDR was introduced.
    Instead, the marshaling rules for the new types were simply added to CDR,
    and the type code interface was extended to handle these.

    Unfortunately, this creates some rather serious problems for interoperability.
